a second-term Trump will be far less constrained by politics than he was in his first term. The irony could well be that Democrats will find themselves far more pleased substantively with a “legacy”-seeking Trump in his second term than conservatives and Republicans.

Inevitably, therefore, press coverage was often badly wrong, reflecting both the not-so-hidden agendas of many other players, and the usual media bias, laziness, lack of education and professionalism, and short attention span. I felt then, and feel now, no obligation to correct reporters’ mistakes about me piecemeal; if I did that, I would barely have time for anything else.

There is nothing new in the story. It is as old as the Sibylline books. It falls into that long, dismal catalogue of the fruitlessness of experience, and the confirmed unteachability of mankind. Want of foresight, unwillingness to act when action would be simple and effective, lack of clear thinking, confusion of counsel until emergency comes, until self-preservation strikes its jarring gong—these are the features which constitute the endless repetition of history.
